Step 1: Heating Preparations

Ready up a microwave or fire outside (read “How to Build and Start a Fire” to learn how to make a fire outside). This will be your tool to roast the marshmallows, and ultimately, make the s’mores. Be sure to have a stick or skewer ready to roast the marshmallows. Have the fire at a medium-size, not too small, and not too big either.

If you are using an oven, be sure to put it on 150℉, and pre-heat your oven for 2 minutes.

Step 2: Roasting the Marshmallows

Roasting the marshmallows is the fun part. Put it over the fire (not too close) and wait for it to turn golden brown. Some people even like roasting it till it’s black to get a more tender taste! You can turn your marshmallow so that it is evenly roasted on all sides. Make sure that you have your graham crackers at arm’s reach because the marshmallow can get soft and gooey after roasting, while becoming very tender at the same time, making it vulnerable to collapsing on the skewer under its own weight.

If you are using a microwave, place a plate made out of china or paper fiber (so it won’t catch on fire) in the microwave. Then, put one of the graham crackers on the plate. Next, put the marshmallow on top of the graham cracker, and heat it all up for 20-25 seconds.

Step 3: Extracting Your Treat

This is when it starts to get a little bit tricky. Once the marshmallow is ready, you put it between your graham crackers by putting the marshmallow on top of one of the graham crackers, then taking the other cracker and putting it on top. Next, slowly pull the skewer out of the marshmallow while keeping a firm grip on the marshmallow with the graham crackers. Remember, if you do not do this part carefully, you could cause your marshmallow to fall or your graham cracker to crack, so be careful. If done correctly, you will end up with a 3/4 finished s’ more!

If you are using a microwave, take the plate with the marshmallow out and put it on a flat surface, ready for the next step.

Step 4: Conclusion

Once you have the skewer out from the marshmallow, discard the skewer. Lift up one of the graham crackers (if you are using a fire) and slide your chocolate square/bar into the s’more. The chocolate will automatically melt due to the heat of the marshmallow. After about 10 seconds when the chocolate is melted, it is ready to eat!
