Mahana Beach Green Sand Beach In Hawaii (Papakolea): 1 of 4 Spectacular Green Sand Beaches in the World!

There are only 4 green sand beaches in the world, and only one of them is in the 50 states; the Mahana Beach (also known as Papakolea Green Sand Beach) on the Big Island of Hawaii. Known for its olive-green sand accentuated by beautifully clear water and jagged cliffs forming a cove, it's a must-see on any tourist's Big Island vacation. Look no further to find all the information you need about this hike leading to a beach to remember. Overview The Mahana Beach is located on the southern side of the Big Island (Ka'u). Right off the main Hawaii Belt Road, traveling south, it's located near the end of the island. The surrounding area is sparse, with few people and amenities. In order to reach the beach, you need to take a hike; parking is available at the trailhead. A sneak peak ...

Things to Do in Ka’u [South Big Island] (Big Island Guide Day 6)

The Southern point of the Big Island, known as Ka'u, hosts some of the most notable features of the Big Island. A rugged section of the coastline, featuring both outcrops and stunning beaches, has a little bit of everything you could want in Hawaii. Famous attractions include the Southernmost point in the United States and the Mahana Green Sand Beach, one of only 3 (three!) green sand beaches in the world. This picturesque section of the island comes after our day in the East side of the island centered around Puna and Mauna Kea. Ka'u can be reached by driving south from either Puna or Kailua-Kona. Things to Do in Puna and Mauna Kea (Big Island Guide Day 5)

Arguably the most overlooked location of the Big Island is Puna; covered in thick forests and old lava flows, at first glance it may pose an unappealing sight; this is one of the most hippie spots I've ever been to, and many establishments are abandoned. But visiting the east of the Big Island will provide you with an experience like no other; the beaches are the most beautiful on the island, with black sand beaches and hidden recreation centers wherever you look. The fruit is abundant in the lush rainforests. And on the way back from Puna, a stop you can't miss is Mauna Kea, the world's tallest mountain (yes, even taller than Everest, when measured from seafloor). This icon of the Big Island is only a few hours' drive away. Just to the east of Volcanoes National Park is Puna. From ...

Things to Do in Volcanoes National Park (Big Island Guide Day 4)

One of the most isolated national parks in America, being across the Pacific Ocean on the Big Island, Volcanoes National Park doesn't often show up high on "Top 10" Lists for National Parks. However, it's truly a hidden gem; it's not every day you get to explore an active volcano and its stunning effects on the landscape. No Big Island vacation is complete without an excursion to Volcanoes National Park. Following a busy day in Hilo, we simply drive up the mountain to Volcano Village, where our day trip of Volcanoes begins! Note: This is a work in progress. Check back once the article is finished! Things to Do in Hilo Area (Big Island Guide Day 3)

The Hilo region, surrounding its namesake city, the largest on the island, is the lushest part of the Island of Hawai'i. On this "Road to Hilo", this rainforest landscape and its breathtaking beauty rivals the famed Road to Hana on Maui, but with more amenities. Following this scenic road takes us down to Hilo, which although isn't a perfect vacation destination, there's plenty to keep you occupied during the day. After 2 Days in Waimea and Waikoloa, we're onto (quite literally) greener pastures, travelling along the North side of the Island to reach Hilo in this guide. Note: This is a work in progress. Things to Do in Waimea and Waikoloa (Big Island Guide Day 1 + 2)

Despite being near each other, both the Waikoloa and Waimea regions of the Big Island offer contrary but awesome attractions. Just north of Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa is a collection of villages known for high-end resorts and pristine beaches, rivaling those directly south. But even without racking up a check, there are plenty of scenic points to view here. Then, just up the neighboring mountains is Waimea, the gateway to Hilo and the Northeast, providing a green transitional landscape with beautiful hikes and beaches. We'll be hitting the ground running after landing in the Kailua-Kona Airport, taking 2 days to explore the North-Northwest of Big Island in this guide to Waimea and Waikoloa. Note: This is a work in progress. Check back once the article is finished! This art...

Big Island Guide: Hawaii in 7 Days

Note: Big Island Guide is part of the Hawaii in 7 Days series. Read till the end of Big Island Guide for more information. The Big Island, or the Island of Hawai'i, is the largest, youngest, and namesake of the Hawaiian Islands. It's known for the tallest mountain in the world (yep, it's not Everest) measured from the seafloor, Mauna Kea, the active volcanoes visible in Volcanoes National Park, abundant animal + plant life, along with all the features of a tropical paradise that make it a Hawaiian Island. However, it's overshadowed by its popular cousins of Oahu and Maui. Its more atypical landscape, size, and the prospect of volcanoes can often scare tourists away. However, if you're willing to give the Island of Hawaii a chance, we've got you covered with a guide to the Big Island of...
